Working through 30 local partner agencies, United Way supports about 75 programs in eight action areas. United Way also sponsors five direct service programs.  In Broome County, United  Way can trace its history back to at least 1918, the earliest known date for the Binghamton United Relief Organization, which was formed to coordinate fund-raising activities among several health and human service organizations. 

United Way of Broome County is part of a international network of about 1,300 United Ways in the United States and others in Canada, Australia, and other nations around the globe. Each one is independent and local in both operation and control. Most operate within only one county. Originally organized to coordinate activities among local charities, United Way's role has expanded over the years. It is now a leader in helping to create partnerships among organizations and seeking ways to improve the lives of the people living in Broome County.
