Fund Distribution

United Way works with businesses, government, education, and other not-for-profit organizations to determine the most pressing needs in our community. It then takes a leading role in organizing partnerships and community initiatives to determine the best methods to solve these problems and improve the quality of life for the people of Broome County.

About 125 allocations volunteers serve on committees which review member agency programs, finances, and management to ensure that funds go to effective, well-run agencies and programs that address the most critical community needs.

The recommendations are then presented to the Allocations Steering Committee for review, then given to the Community Services Division for any revisions, and then finally presented to United Way's Board of Directors for final approval.

In March of every year, the United Way begins its monthly distribution of funds to member agencies. Funding goes to specific programs at the agencies, rather than the agency's overall budget. This helps to direct funding to priority needs and prevent duplication of services in the community.  For organizations that cover more than one county, United Way of Broome County provides funding only for their activities within Broome County.

Money donated is well managed

United Way of Broome County makes sure that the money you donate is directed to the programs where it will do the most good. United Way also keeps costs low so that nearly all money contributed, 90.2 percent, goes directly to local agencies and services--compared with the national average for all charities of less than 75%.  Every program that receives United Way funds is held accountable for using its allocation to achieve its stated mission.

United Way's funds are distributed among its six areas of service.
