2010 United Way Campaign Raises $3.67 Million

In year with economic challenges for both employers and employees, United Way of Broome County has raised $3.67 million in its annual fund drive.

Campaign Chair David Niefer said, “There is much to celebrate regarding the results of the 2010 Campaign. Thank you for your donations that are going to make possible the funding of over 70 United Way programs this year, focusing on our community in the areas of education, health, and income.

United Way continues to be the largest distributor of donated funds to health and human services programs in Broome County. Donations from the 2010 Campaign will go to programs at partner agencies, other area not-for-profit organizations, and direct services provided by United Way in 2011. The specific amounts going to each program will be announced in February.

Highlights of giving to the United Way Campaign include:

· A total of 11 corporate and foundation partners contributed $50,000 or more to the Campaign.

· Over 1,700 donors participated in the new Step Up initiative, which aimed at attracting new donors to give at least $1 a week or past donors to increase their gifts by $1 or more a week. This program surpassed all expectations, with about half of the participants being new donors, and raising almost $88,000.

· There were some major increases in corporate gifts and employee campaigns. For example, Frito-Lay and its employees significantly increased both their employee donations and corporate gift, doubling both over last year.

Although the 2010 Campaign has ended, gifts to United Way of Broome County received in the next few weeks can be credited to the 2010 fund drive and will be included with the funds distributed this year. Contributions can be mailed to United Way of Broome County, P.O. Box 550, Binghamton, NY 13902-0550 or can be donated online at www.unitedwaybroome.org.
